History

Myrhorod region is one of the oldest territories of the Left-bank Ukraine. Its name, according to legends, comes from the word “myr” (peace), as negotiations between different peoples were held here. In the 17th century, Myrhorod was the centre of the registered Cossack regiment, playing a key role in the struggle of Ukrainians for independence.

In 1631, the city was granted Magdeburg Law, which contributed to its economic development. The Myrhorod Cossacks took an active part in the war led by Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, and later in the Russian-Turkish and Seven Years’ Wars. In the 18th century, Myrhorod became a major trading centre, maintaining links with Danzig, Leipzig, Berlin and other European cities. Local craftsmen were famous for their leather, ceramic and metal products.

Myrhorod is a city with a rich cultural heritage. The Georgian poet David Guramishvili lived here for 32 years, and a museum in his honour was opened in the city. Every year, cultural events are held in his honour with the participation of the Georgian community and diplomatic representatives.

The Myrhorod Community has preserved many historical monuments. The village of Khomutets is home to the Muraviov-Apostols estate, the centre of cultural life in the 18th century. The collection of the library and art gallery of the estate testifies to the high level of education of its owners.

The village of Kybyntsi was famous for its manor house, which housed works of art, items of the French royal family and old books. The Trudoliub hamlet, or “Poltava Eden”, amazed visitors with its picturesque beauty: sculptures, an artificial lake, parks and rare plants.

Dibrivka Stud Farm, founded in 1888, is still a centre for breeding trotting horses. Every year, spectacular races are held here, attracting tourists from all over Ukraine and abroad.

The Community Development Strategy until 2030, approved by the City Council in 2024, defines four key areas of development.

The first one is to create a comfortable environment for residents and guests of the community. This involves modernising urban infrastructure, improving transport links and enhancing environmental safety.

The second area is the development of healthcare, rehabilitation and tourism. Myrhorod is known for its healing mineral waters, so the community plans to improve its resort facilities, expand the range of medical and rehabilitation services, and attract new tourists.

The third vector of the strategy is the development of an environmentally friendly, competitive economy. This includes supporting entrepreneurship, developing the agricultural sector, introducing environmentally friendly technologies and attracting investment.

The fourth goal is to increase the institutional capacity of local self-government. The community is committed to the digitalisation of administrative services, efficient resource management and enhanced international cooperation.

The implementation of these strategic goals will contribute to the sustainable development of the Myrhorod Community, ensure economic growth and improve the quality of life of its residents.
