History

Kamianets-Podilskyi was first mentioned in historical documents in the second half of the 14th century and, according to archaeological data, it was formed as a town two centuries earlier. A town that was the first of the Podillia towns to obtain Magdeburg rights, Kamianets-Podilskyi is officially recognized as one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.

The main attractions of the town are the ancient stone fortress built on the banks of the Smotrych River to protect the town and an unparalleled natural canyon which is over 20 million years old! Before the full-scale war, various cultural events, ethnographic, historical and music festivals often took place in Kamianka, as well as the Hot air balloon festival, which attracted thousands of Ukrainian and foreign tourists.

Economy and Well-Being

The town is known for its developed tourist infrastructure with many hotels, hostels and restaurants that will surprise any gourmet! There are more than 150 accommodation establishments and even more restaurants and cafes.

In addition to the tourism industry, the community also has agricultural and construction enterprises, light industry and medical equipment manufacturers.

There are 26 preschool education institutions and 30 general education institutions in the Kamianets-Podilskyi urban territorial community.

Sports are developed and loved here: there are three operating stadiums and a preserved network of physical culture and health clubs and children’s and youth sports schools. Also, there are 52 artistic and scientific clubs for children here.

The community has five public medical institutions, as well as about 100 privately-owned medical and diagnostic institutions.

As part of the presidential programme Major Construction, the municipal hospital of the Kamianets-Podilskyi Town Council underwent reconstruction and re-equipment of the reception department for its reorganization into an emergency medical care department.

Community and War

On February 24, the first day of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, the Kamianets-Podilskyi community began receiving the first people fleeing the war to safer regions of the country. In total, about 24,000 IDPs are officially registered in the community, which constitutes almost a third of the community’s population.

Residents united to accommodate people and provide priority needs. The forces of the community still provide two free meals for the displaced people; public laundries, a hygiene centre, a social hairdresser and a social centre with free essential goods were opened in the town.

People of the Community

In November 2020, Mykhailo Positko, then aged 35, was elected Mayor –young, enthusiastic, energetic, with a great desire for changes and correct actions on the way to the town’s development.

  Since the beginning of the war, the mayor has taken over the coordination of community security processes, and also coordinates humanitarian matters in the town.

On February 24, the residents of the town began to work in the new realities of war as a single mechanism. Hundreds of volunteers, doctors, soldiers, employees of local self-government authorities, business owners – all these people are working side by side to bring victory closer.

Development Strategy

The community is developing its potential not only in tourism, but also attracts new investors and creates new innovative projects.

In 2022, the community received a grant of EUR 900,000 for the implementation of the project entitled Enhancing the Economic Growth In the Kamianets-Podilskyi Community.

The Project is mainly aimed at supporting small and medium-sized businesses, in particular, the development of creative industries, tourism, production and processing of agricultural products, social entrepreneurship, women’s entrepreneurship and responsible small and medium-sized businesses.

A design of an industrial park on the territory of the town is currently in the works. Innovative investment projects have been developed to create new tourist attractions, adapt cultural monuments and create a balneological resort.
