History

The first written mention of the settlement dates back to 1555.

According to legend, the name of the settlement is associated with a shepherd named Struk, who grazed sheep, but could not drive the flock home, because deep snow suddenly fell. Then the shepherd built a shelter for the sheep out of ash (Ukrainian – yasen) and left them to winter. And when he returned, all the sheep were intact. As a sign of gratitude to God, Struk built a small wooden church, which has been called Strukivska ever since. Since then, the ash tree has become the symbol of the village. It gave the name to the village and is depicted on its coat of arms.

Built in 1824, the Strukivska Church, or the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, is one of Ukraine’s most famous wooden churches. Since 2013, it has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Here, the visitors will see tools used by Hutsuls in their economic activity in the 19th and early 20th centuries, as well as samples of embroidery, carving, cooperage, weaving, etc. Also, the museum has collected representatives of the fauna of the Carpathians listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.
