History
The city of Dnipro was founded on the territories of Cossack settlements in 1524.
Built in 1635, Kodaky Fortress is located on the right bank of the Dnipro River in the territory of the village of Stari Kodaky. This fortress appeared on European maps immediately after its construction. It was valuable due to the fact that it was built in front of the first threshold of the Dnipro River, which allowed controlling the strategic route from Zaporizhzhia Sich to the well-developed Ukrainian lands.
As of today, most of the fortress has been destroyed by a granite quarry that was exploited during the Soviet Union. However, part of the Kodaky fortress was saved.
Another interesting historic site is Stara Samar. This is a settlement that arose in the first quarter of the 16th century to serve the trade route across the Samara River. It was used for transit trade, and this fact is confirmed by Polish, Hanseatic, Dutch, Russian, Tatar and Turkish coins, trade stamps, items etc.
Archaeologists have already discovered many residential premises, an inn and a church. The remains of the powerful fortress, built by Hetman Ivan Mazepa in 1668 and reconstructed in the 1730s, have survived to this day.
At the end of the 18th century, the Russian Empire planned to create its third southern capital and outpost here.
In the 19th century, the city, which was then called Katerynoslav, was considered the center of the then district, but did not have any industrial capacity.
The unstoppable rise of the city began at the end of the 19th century. Oleksandr Pol discovered iron ore and contributed to the construction of the railway.
During the Second World War, fierce battles took place in the city.
In 1950, the city became the center of the rocket industry of the Soviet Union.
After Ukraine gained independence, “Pivdenmash” and design office “Pivdenne” resumed their work in the area of “peaceful space”, including the joint project with the United States, Sea Start.
The community has a large number of historical and cultural monuments.
Verstova Mylia Obelisk is the oldest landmark in the city. This symbol of the founding of the city is located near the Transfiguration Cathedral.
The Transfiguration Cathedral is an architectural monument. The first groundwork of the temple was done in 1787, but the construction did not progress beyond the foundation. The second stage of groundwork falls on 1830, and as soon as 1835, the cathedral was completed. The temple in the style of classicism has a T-shaped configuration, to which three entrances – the main, northern and southern – lead.
With the advent of Soviet power, the cathedral was closed, and the building was used as a warehouse. From 1975 the museum of religion and atheism was placed in the temple which was returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in 1992. The church houses the icons of the “Weeping Savior” and the Mother of God “Iverska”, a reliquary cross with fragments of the relics of the Baptist John the Baptist, and other items of worship.
Opened in Dnipro in 2012, Menorah is a cultural and business center, the world’s largest Jewish complex with a total area of 50,000 square meters.
The Menorah complex consists of 7 towers, which is the temple seven-branched candelabrum. The tallest tower is 77 m high (22 floors).
The first floor of the center is the “Gallery”, made of marble and specially made Jerusalem stone. The Gallery presents 12 facades of ancient Katerynoslav, which housed men’s and women’s schools, synagogues and various places where the city’s Jewish life took place.
Popular is the observation deck, located on the roof of the 6th tower at a height of 63 m which offers a panoramic view of the city. You can visit it during the Menorah tour or separately. There are souvenir shops, cafes, creative workshops, offices, two hotels and an art gallery in the complex.
The towers are the twin buildings of the residential complex “Bashty”, built in 1999–2005. (35-b Vernadskoho Str.).
They consist of the Western and Eastern towers of 28 floors, united by a three-level platform. The height of the buildings reaches 106 m, which at the time of construction was the maximum height for buildings in Ukraine.
For the high quality of construction works, the residential complex “Bashty” became the winner of the All-Ukrainian competition for the best buildings and structures in 2003.
The peculiarity of the complex is that the main entrance is designed from the second floor and begins with a spacious lobby connected to a bar and a billiards room.
Here you can spend your leisure time without leaving your home. The towers are often depicted on postcards and magazines as a calling card of the city. Apartments here are among the most expensive in Dnipro.
Economy
Dnipro historically was and remains one of the main industrial centers of Ukraine. A powerful metallurgical and machine-building industry is concentrated here, which forms the basis of the city’s economy. Its large enterprises include Interpipe, Dniprospetsstal, Pivdenmash, and design office Pivdenne.
These companies not only provide thousands of jobs, but also stimulate the development of related branches such as electronics, automation and chemical industries.
Dnipro has a strong industrial potential: industrial enterprises produce 6% of all industrial products of Ukraine.
The city’s enterprises engaging in light, food and processing industries produce food products amounting to 5.6% of the total production of Ukraine.
The city construction complex ranks second in Ukraine and includes 150 construction organizations and 56 design companies.
Also, an industrial park design project is being developed and implemented in the city, which is an attractive investment target.
The city is actively working to improve the investment environment. The city government is implementing initiatives aimed at simplifying business, reducing bureaucratic barriers and supporting innovative projects. Dnipro offers preferential conditions for investors in industrial parks and technological zones.
In recent years, Dnipro has been rapidly developing as an IT center of Ukraine. Numerous IT companies work here, including both local and international outsourcing firms. The city has a developed startup ecosystem with several technology hubs, accelerators and incubators that support young technology projects.
Small and medium-sized enterprises are an important element of Dnipro’s economy. Entrepreneurs are actively working in the field of trade, services, production and IT. The city regularly hosts business forums, exhibitions and conferences aimed at supporting entrepreneurship and sharing experience.
Dnipro is a major trade center of the region. Numerous shopping complexes, markets, logistics and distribution centers are located here. The service sector is also developing dynamically, covering tourism, hotel and restaurant business, banking sector and retail trade.
Although Dnipro is known primarily as an industrial center, the surrounding areas are actively engaged in agriculture. The main areas are the cultivation of grain, oil crops and animal husbandry. The city serves as an important logistics hub for agricultural products.
Dnipro, like all of Ukraine, faces a number of challenges: in particular, the economic consequences of the war and the need to modernize industrial capacities. However, the city has significant potential for economic growth thanks to its industrial traditions, innovative technologies and the development of the IT sector.
Community and War
On February 24, 2022, on Thursday, around five in the morning, russian troops entered the territory of Ukraine from russia, Belarus and the annexed Crimea. Tens of thousands of Dnipro residents woke up to explosions and cannonade. A great war began. Our life was forever divided into “before” and “after” the terrible February dawn.
From the beginning of March, thousands of people were at the central station of Dnipro. Women with children, elderly people put their whole lives in small bug-out bags and went to the west of the country or abroad. At the same time, a large number of people came to Dnipro from the Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions in the hope of protection and help.
Over 173 thousand displaced people are currently living in Dnipro. The city remains a hub for a huge number of people from the frontline areas. And this number is constantly increasing. Many families living here lost their homes due to the war. Some rent housing on their own, others stay temporarily in city shelters.
People of the Community
The mayor of Dnipro, Borys Filatov, has been actively managing the city since 2015. Under his leadership, numerous projects were implemented to develop infrastructure and improve the quality of life in Dnipro.
Borys Filatov is recognized as an initiative leader who is able to effectively cooperate with the public and state bodies. Its activities are often aimed at the modernization of utilities and the development of social programs.
Today, when russia’s war against Ukraine has left its harsh imprint on every corner of the country, Dnipro has become one of the key outposts of resistance – not only because of the geographical location, but also because of the people who work, fight and support each other every day. Dnipro residents are not just residents of a big city. They are a symbol of inexhaustible energy, patriotism and self-sacrifice.
In recent years, the people of Dnipro have shown themselves not only as factory workers or office employees, but also as volunteers who bring help to the front lines, doctors who save lives in conditions of constant pressure, and teachers who teach children in bomb shelters.
Development Strategy
The city of Dnipro is a vivid example of dynamic development that combines a rich industrial heritage with modern innovative achievements.
Today, Dnipro continues to strengthen its position as a key economic center of Ukraine, actively involving international partners in cooperation. Thanks to leading companies in the space industry, such as “Pivdenmash”, the city participates in global projects for the development and launch of rockets, demonstrating its potential in high-tech industries.
In addition, the city is actively developing its infrastructure, modernizing transport systems and residential areas in order to create comfortable conditions for residents and guests of the city.
An important aspect of the modern history of the Dnipro is its role as an outpost in times of war. The city has become a center of support for humanitarian and defense efforts, playing a strategic role in maintaining stability and security in eastern Ukraine. This spirit of resilience underscores Dnipro’s readiness for the challenges facing the country and its ability to adapt to new realities.
Dnipro is also becoming an important center for the development of the IT sphere. Thanks to the growing number of startups and IT companies, the city is becoming a hub for innovative solutions, which opens new horizons for international cooperation in the technology field.
Another important area of development is the introduction of European values and standards. The city actively supports the ideas of sustainable development and transparent management. By introducing environmentally friendly technologies, Dnipro does everything to preserve the environment and create a comfortable living space. Education is also central to the development strategy. Cooperation with international educational institutions makes it possible to train highly qualified specialists who meet the requirements of the modern economy.
In addition, Dnipro is open to cultural and social diversity. The city actively promotes the integration of European values such as inclusiveness, tolerance and equal opportunities for all its residents. This makes it even more attractive for those looking for partners for joint projects.
The investment potential of the city also deserves attention. Transparent business conditions, creation of industrial parks and innovation centers provide a favorable climate for new investors. The city offers a number of incentives for the development of international projects, making it an ideal place to expand investment portfolios.
Dnipro has strong international ties, actively cooperating with sister cities and participating in European programs such as Horizon Europe and Interreg. This allows the city to implement the latest technologies and create a stable basis for long-term partnerships.
