Brovary community

The Brovary community is one of the largest in the Kyiv region.
The community consists of 1 city and 3 villages.
Historical records
The name of Brovary comes from the word brovar, meaning a brewer. From ancient times, people referred to locals as brewers, since they brewed beer here.
Brovary was first mentioned in chronicles in 1630. At that time it was a small town. Peasants were mainly engaged in agriculture, and more affluent Cossacks made wine and brewed beer.
During the Ukrainian liberation war of 1648-1657 ( also known as Khmelnytskyi Uprising), the first Hetman of Ukraine Bohdan Khmelnytsky particularly cherished Brovary.
Ukrainian writer Taras Shevchenko mentioned Brovary in his works.
The Bykivnia graves
The Bykivnia Graves National Historical Memorial, the largest burial place in Ukraine for victims of the mass political repressions of 1937-1941 is located near the city.
The victims included representatives of more than 30 nationalities, including foreigners. The Poles from the well-known “Katyn list” were also executed here.
The Bykivnia tragedy is among the greatest crimes in the history of mankind alongside Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, Babyn Yar and the Katyn massacre.
Brovary, economic center of Kyiv region
Over 3,000 enterprises and organizations work in the community. The chemical industry, mechanical engineering, capital construction and woodworking are among the most developed industries.
A Coca-Cola plant for the production of soft and carbonated beverages operates near Brovary. The community manufactures multi-purpose helicopters: VV-2, V-52, V-22 and business class aircrafts: V-24 / V-24L.
Brovary ranks first in the Kyiv region in terms of direct foreign investment attraction.
City of modern constructions
The number of new buildings in Brovary is inferior only to the capital city of Kyiv. The construction boom began here in the 1970s and continues until nowadays. Skyscrapers in the city reach 94 meters. The community expects to increase the population to 200,000 in the coming years.
International partnership
Brovary community has active city partnerships in many countries around the world.
There are 10 cooperation agreements in the community. The international partnerships are being actively developed.
For example, the residents of Tacoma (Washington, USA) handed over an ambulance to Brovary city.
Brovary community was three times awarded with special diplomas of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (2014, 2015, 2018).
Community and the War
On February 24, 2022, the community woke up to the roar of rockets. Seven people died and seventeen were injured with the shelling of military units, located on the territory of Brovary community.
Six more people were injured by a new air strike on Brovary on February 28.
On April 17, a rocket attack damaged the city’s infrastructure, disrupting power and water supplies in the city. Fortunately, this time there were no casualties.
On May 4, another missile strike on Brovary was launched, but the missiles were shot down between the villages of Trebukhiv and Krasylivka by Ukraine air defense forces.
The Humanitarian Headquarters has been working in Brovary community since the start of the War. It collects food, medicine, hygiene products, basic necessities and clothing from local residents for displaced persons and people in need.
There is also a Clothes Bank in the community, where anyone who needs clothes or shoes can get it.
Local self-governance
Igor Sapozhko has been leading the community for more than 12 years. The mayor has been in the city since February 24 and defended the community from the occupiers side by side with the residents.
The future vision
Brovary aims to ensure a high quality of living and safe environment for its residents, as well as ensure sustainable socio-economic and cultural development of the community.
The community strives to become number one in doing business ratings of Kyiv region.
