Historical records

The name of Brovary comes from the word brovar, meaning a brewer. From ancient times, people referred to locals as brewers, since they brewed beer here.

Brovary was first mentioned in chronicles in 1630. At that time it was a small town. Peasants were mainly engaged in agriculture, and more affluent Cossacks made wine and brewed beer.

During the Ukrainian liberation war of 1648-1657 ( also known as Khmelnytskyi Uprising), the first Hetman of Ukraine Bohdan Khmelnytsky particularly cherished Brovary.

Ukrainian writer Taras Shevchenko mentioned Brovary in his works.
