At the end of 1951, construction of a large thermal power plant began on the banks of the Siverskyi Donets River. In September 1954, the Sloviansk State District Power Plant began producing electricity. At the same time, the construction of a new settlement began near the village of Mykolaivka.

By the decision of the executive committee of the regional council dated September 14, 1956, the village of Mykolaivka of the Sloviansk district, together with the new settlement of the Sloviansk state district power station were categorized as an urban-type settlement, leaving behind the name Mykolaivka.
