History

The Nadvirna Community has deep historical roots. Its history means centuries of changes and ordeals.

The first written mention of Nadvirna dates back to 1589. According to legend, the name of the town comes from “nad virnykh” meaning very faithful people who lived in its territory.

The Community survived the periods of the Polish and Austro-Hungarian rule, and also witnessed the events of the First and Second World Wars.

During those ordeals, the Community showed its resilience and endurance. From early July 1941 to 27 July 1944, it was occupied by German and Hungarian troops. With the return of Soviet troops, the armed struggle between the UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) and NKVD (Soviet secret service) units began, which lasted until 1952. Despite this, the Community recovered after destruction and periods of occupation, and preserved its cultural heritage and identity.

This is the oldest landmark in the town, which has a mysterious history. There are practically no documents about it, and it is impossible to establish the approximate time of its erection and construction stages, which is of great interest to historians. It is known that the complex burned during the First World War. Austro-Hungarian coins, broken porcelain, pieces of ceramic dishes were found during the excavations. The town residents say that the two fortresses – the castle in Nadvirna and the castle in the village of Pniv – are connected by underground passages.

The oldest building in the town is the Roman Catholic Church of the Holy Trinity dating back to 1599. The church began to look as it looks today back in 1937, and later it was named the Church of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A monument to Pope John Paul II was erected in front of the building.

The Nadvirna Community History Museum, founded in 1995, became not only a place of preservation of the past, but also a testimony of the ordeals that the Ukrainian population had to go through.

In its basement, the memory of the torture that people were subjected to by the punitive institutions of the Soviet authorities and the fascist invaders is preserved. Terrible traces of those events can still be seen on the stairs in the form of blood stains, and on the walls one can see the words written by those who became victims of these atrocities. This museum is not only a place to study history, but also plays an important role in reproducing and preserving the memory of past events that should never be forgotten.
