History

The town of Novyi Rozdil was founded in May 1953 in the southwestern part of the Lviv region. Its creation was the result of the development of one of Europe’s largest native sulfur deposits, located near the ancient village of Rozdil. This production of sulfur, which reached volumes of up to 800 thousand tons per year, became the basis for the economic development of the new town.

Novyi Rozdil was designed as a center to provide the necessary infrastructure and housing for workers involved in sulfur mining and mineral fertilizer production. After the end of mining in the late 1990s, when this process became unprofitable, the town began to look for new ways to develop and adapt to modern conditions.

Today, the Novyi Rozdil is actively developing, using its economic, scientific, cultural and labor potential. The town became the administrative center of the Novyi Rozdil territorial community and continues to develop to improve the quality of life and economic growth.

The Rzewuski- Lanckoroński Palace represents the architecture of the 17th-18th centuries and has a landscape park holding the status of a monument of garden and park art.

The first tycoon’s summer residence in the style of classicism was built in Rozdil by Stanislav Rzewuski, Lviv Zemstvo Judge. Only an outbuilding of the residence has survived to the present day.

The Rzewuski family built the luxurious stone palace in 1704 and arranged a courtyard park around it. Michał Józef Rzewuski named the brick palace Frankopol in honor of his second wife Franziska of Cetners. The palace was inherited by four generations of the Rzewuski family, and then the building became the property of the Lanckoroński family.

In 1874, they began the reconstruction of the old building and the construction of a new building according to the design project by Professor Julian Zachariewicz, Rector of the Lviv Polytechnic University. In 1904, the French architect Charles Baujouet combined the Zachariewicz building with the old building and furnished everything in an artistic style. The 60-room palace had all the advantages of contemporary civilization – electric lighting, water supply, and telephone.

The palace impressed with its sophistication and was famous for its collection of art objects, which was not inferior to the collection of Emperor Franz Joseph. There were old and new weapons, Eastern carpets and Western tapestries, a large collection of marble statues, Renaissance paintings, antique furniture, porcelain, a library of 20,000 volumes and a collection of photographs of the most valuable works of art from the most famous museums in the world, which numbered 120,000 pieces

The palace is surrounded by a wonderful landscaped (English) park with an area of 12 hectares. The park has the status of a valuable monument of garden and park art. Some representatives of the exotic dendroflora have survived in the park to this day.

The first church on the territory of the village of Berezdivtsi was the Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was built in 1410 at the expense of the local heir Benedikt Bank. It is believed that the temple was built from field elm that grew in the local forests.

Probably, during the Turkish-Tatar raids (1618-1621), the wooden temple was seriously damaged. And in the early 18th century, it suffered from the Swedish troops of Charles XII.

The church escaped miraculously final destruction.

The first written mention of the church in Liashky dates back to 1691. The current one was built of wood in 1700, as evidenced by a plaque on the church wall. This means that it is one of the oldest in the region. The church is a real decoration of the village, which can be seen from afar as it stands on a hill that rises above the village from the north.

Lake Naberezhna

The community also has Lake Naberezhna, an artificial lake located in the center of the town of Novyi Rozdil. Although swimming is prohibited here due to technical nature of water and lack of beaches, the lake is a popular place for fishing. Every year on Fisherman’s Day, exciting competitions are held here, which attract fishing enthusiasts from all over the world. The lake is a great place for relaxing in nature.

Not far from Novyi Rozdil is one of the most unique and picturesque places in the Lviv region – Lake Barvinok. It is a cozy place to relax. It was formed as a result of damming the Barvinok River. The lake is 2-3 km long and up to 50 meters wide. The average depth is 3-8 meters, but in places there are depressions up to 9 meters. Lake Barvinok is surrounded on 3 sides by protected oak and beech forests, which creates a unique natural landscape. There are 5 recreational beaches around the lake. There are many fish in the lake.

Community and War

After the full-scale russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, residents of the Novyi Rozdil community took an active part in helping the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Territorial Defense Forces, as well as overcoming the consequences of the war.

As of June 2022, more than two thousand internally displaced persons have found shelter in the town. Temporary accommodation was arranged for them on the basis of dormitories of two lyceums and a college.

From the first days, the Center for Humanitarian Aid, created on the basis of the Civic and Youth Council under the Novyi Rozdil Town Council, has been operating in the town. The center works in two directions: providing food for the territorial defense and internally displaced persons and collecting and delivering aid to the military in the East and South of Ukraine. Also, the Caritas-Novyi Rozdil charitable foundation took an active position in solving humanitarian problems.

Cooperation with foreign partners has intensified, in particular, the sister town of Police has already delivered humanitarian goods to the Novyi Rozdil community several times. Volunteers from the town’s Volunteer Assistance Center organize charity fairs where they sell Easter eggs, Ukrainian paraphernalia, and souvenirs. The proceeds from the sale were donated to help the army
