History
The Stari Bohorodchany Community is a territory with a rich history dating back more than five centuries. The first written mention of the village dates back to 1441, when Bohorodchany were transferred to the nobleman Jan Kamenetskyi. As early as 1505, these lands became the property of Polish magnates, and over time the village became an important administrative centre.
There are different versions of the origin of the village name. According to one of them, a boyar built a castle on the mountain, and the settlement under the mountain was named Bohorodchany, in honour of the Virgin Mary, who saved the boyar’s children who had gotten lost in the forest.
There is also another version. The name Bohorodchany could have originated from the ancient secular name Bohorod, the existence of which is attested in documents.
The village received its full modern name with the clarifying designation “Stari” after the foundation of the town of Bohorodchany, the present-day district centre, and has been officially mentioned in documents since 1740.

In the second half of the fifteenth century, the village became the property of the Potocki counts. Polish oppression was exacerbated by religious and national persecution. The desperate peasants responded to the heavy oppression of the Polish gentry by protesting and rising up to fight the outsiders.
In the eighteenth century, the village’s outskirts were the scene of the activities of the Opryshky, with their famous leader Oleksa Dovbush. Opryshky often attacked local fortresses, including Bohorodchany. They organized daring attacks here, seizing weapons and destroying tax registration documents.

During the World War I, fierce battles between Austro-Hungarian and Russian troops took place on the territory of the community. There were military trenches on the mountain. At the beginning of 1917, a large number of troops were concentrated here. During World War II, a cell of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) operated underground in Stari Bohorodchany.
In recent years, the community has been actively working to improve infrastructure, including road repairs, modernization of educational institutions, and development of social services. This helps to improve the quality of life of residents and creates opportunities for attracting investment.
Despite its historical heritage, the community is also focused on modern development, actively working on projects that contribute to the well-being of local residents and the development of the local economy.

The Community and the War
The Stari Bohorodchany Community, like the rest of the country, faced the full-scale war with dignity and resilience. From the very first days of the invasion, local residents began to unite to support the Ukrainian army, the IDPs, and each other.
A humanitarian hub was set up in the community, which became a centre for collecting and distributing aid. Local residents collected food, clothing, medicines and other essentials and sent them to the front.

The women wove nets, baked bread for the defenders, and organized charity fairs. Young people joined volunteer initiatives.

In addition to supporting the frontline, the community helps internally displaced persons. Temporary shelters were set up in local schools and kindergartens for families who had lost their homes. Volunteers provided them with hot meals, psychological support and necessary items. The community lives in new conditions but retains an indomitable spirit.

Working together for the good of the country has united the residents, making them even stronger and closer to each other. This period was a challenge that the Stari Bohorodchany Community overcame with honour and dignity.
